Representing Victims of Domestic Violence:

Advanced Techniques

The Legal Project’s sponsored a very successful training on June 27 & 28, 2000.Karla Digirolamo, an internally recognized expert in the field of domestic violence and Michelle Haskin, Esq., an active Domestic Violence Legal Connection panel member and mentor, lectured and role-played interview techniques to use with victims of domestic violence.

Trish DeAngelis, Esq., of the Rensselaer County District Attorneys Office gave a vivid and emotional segment on evidence, its collection and admissibility at trial. The Legal Project’s Legal Director Jaya Connors, Esq., and Julia Masch, Esq., of the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence concluded the first evening with a discussion of the importance of amending petitioners’ pro se petitions.

Michelle Haskin, Esq., started the second evening outlining her trial preparation strategy for the upcoming mock trial. The Hon. Christian Hummel, Rensselaer Co. Family Court Judge, presided over the mock trial, with Michelle representing the petitioner and Michael Friedman, Esq., representing the respondent. The roles of petitioner and respondent were played by Andreanna C. Iakovidis and David J. Cheris, both students in the Theatre Department of SUNY-Albany.Professor Mark Dalton prepared all the necessary material for and directed the actors, who did a fabulous job.

Many thanks to all the participants and to our co-sponsors, The Legal Studies Division of The Sage Colleges and the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.
