Update on NYS Funding for
Civil Legal Services
For the first time
in New York State history, the Senate has provided financial support for
civil legal services. For many years, the Assembly has been dedicated
to providing assistance to our programs across the state, for which we
are all very grateful, but this was the first year that the Senate provided
some match for that Assembly support. I want to extend our sincere gratitude
to Anne Erickson and Kristin Brown Lilley of the Empire Justice
Center, and Ed Wasserman of Marsh Wasserman & McHugh LLC
for all of their incredible efforts to make this happen, and to the support
of NYSBA and the WBASNY and CDWBA members who have helped support this
historic change. Even with new statewide funding of a little more than
$2.7 million, when it is spread across the state it helps us keep our
heads above water but does not fill our funding gaps by any means. However,
we hope this will represent a change in the future where Legislative and
hopefully, Executive, funding for civil legal services is seen as a necessity,
without all of the energy draining effort that it took to get here. A
special thank you to Senator Neil Breslin, who did all
that he could to ensure that programs outside of NYC also received due
compensation under this funding stream. Thank you Senator Breslin, for
being a friend to civil legal services and to The Legal Project!
Thank you to the NY Bar
Foundation!
The
Legal Project was delighted to be selected to receive one of only three
statewide Joan L. Ellenbogen Memorial Fellowships for
matrimonial matters by the New York Bar Foundation.
This wonderful honor provides support for a 3L or recent law school
graduate to assist us in our matrimonial caseload for the fall semester.
We are very happy to announce that Lauren Hunt was
selected for this important position. Lauren, a recent graduate of Albany
Law School, is states that she is “thrilled to be returning
to The Legal Project as their Matrimonial Fellow”. Lauren writes:
“I was lucky enough, during my second year and second summer of
law school, to be a law intern at The Legal Project. The experience
was incredibly rewarding both professionally and personally as it reaffirmed
my reasons for choosing to pursue a career in law and made me realize
my passion and commitment to working in this field. Thereafter, I was
a member of the Family Violence Litigation Clinic, organized a Family
Law conference through my position as Student Bar Association Executive
President, and finished my two years
as a member of Albany Law Review. After graduation, while continuing
the job hunt, I began volunteering as a law intern for the Hon. Mark
L. Powers, Schenectady County Family Court Judge and Acting Supreme
Court Justice. The knowledge I am gaining in my internship will no doubt
serve me well in my new position and I plan to split my time between
both chambers and The Legal Project. I am incredibly honored to be selected
for this fellowship and I am extremely excited to be working with all
the wonderful and inspiring people at The Legal Project again.”
Thank you for volunteering
in August!
