11th Annual Pro Bono Reception

There’s still time to register to attend the 11th Annual Pro Bono Reception, where The Legal Project honors the volunteers and community partners who do so much to serve the Capital District. Our 2006 Reception will be on Thursday, October 26th at the beautiful New York State Museum Terrace Gallery. Lydia Kulbida of WNYT will be the Mistress of Ceremonies, and we will have a wonderful Silent Auction filled with great items—with pottery and other original artwork, antiques and collectibles, fabulous gift baskets, fun gift certificates, great children’s items and other items you will definitely want to peruse for your holiday shopping—or for something for you to enjoy. You can register by mail or through our secure website at www.legalproject.org.

Thanks to our Event Steering Committee!

Each year, we have wonderful guidance from our Board’s Event Committee, as well as Co-Chairs of our Honorary Committee, in planning the Pro Bono Reception. This year, as we expand the event and hope to bring in even more people to discover the work of The Legal Project, we have convened a Steering Committee to assist us and we’d like to introduce them and thank them for all of their efforts. We are fortunate to have the help of the following creative and tireless friends: Marri Aviza, Tracey Chandler, Jill Dunn, Timothy H. Easley, Paul Harding, Lisa Norgrove, Eileen Stack and Ed Swyer.

Meet The Staff: Katie Weinberg

Katie is one of our wonderful Legal Services Coordinators here at The Legal Project. She coordinates five of our programs; Affordable Housing Attorney Assistance, Bankruptcy, Legal Clinics, Small Business Legal Network, and Legally Speaking. She has been with us for about a year and a half. She loves working here and is especially grateful that she doesn’t have to wait tables anymore! Outside of work, Katie is an actress at Albany Civic Theater where she can be seen as the lead in their most recent production of Murder By Poe. She also is on their board of directors and runs their box office. In addition to her love of theater and the arts, Katie enjoys rooting for the Yankees, playing soccer, and watching Project Runway. Originally from Plattsburgh, NY, Katie has degrees in Drama and English from Ithaca College.

Thank you for the Support!

AIG Donates $25,000 To Legal Project
AIG recently made an extremely generous donation to The Legal Project, which would help fund our efforts to help victims of domestic violence that are in need of civil legal services. Thank you, AIG, for your extraordinary generosity and spirit of giving!

NYSBA Foundation Awards The Legal Project With $10,000 Grant
The New York State Bar Foundation awarded The Legal Project with a $10,000 grant to support the Domestic Violence Legal Connection program. These funds will assist us in providing litigation costs and other services to pro bono clients who are victims of domestic violence, helping us fill the gap stemming from our loss of federal grant support in 2005-2006. This grant will help us immeasurably, as did the NYSBA Foundation’s domestic violence grant to us last year, as well as a $20,000 emergency grant that they awarded us in 2006. We applaud the NYSBA Foundation for their support of innovative programs such as The Legal Project, promoting creative ways to enhance the delivery of legal services in New York State. Thank you so much for all of your support!

Bank of America Foundation Provides $2,500 Grant to AHAA!
Thank you to the Bank of America Foundation for the support of the Affordable Housing Attorney Assistance Project (AHAA!). We very much appreciate their assistance in keeping this wonderful program going strong. This allows us to continue to provide attorneys at no or low cost to first time, low-income homebuyers in the Capital District. We work in coordination with the many affordable housing programs in the region to make this program a success, and we are always seeking real estate attorneys, or those interested in learning more about real estate law, to join our pro bono panel! Please contact us for more information at kweinberg@legalproject.org.

Thanks to CDWBA & the Diehard Golfers Out There!
Many thanks to the CDWBA for donating the proceeds of the Third Annual Golf Outing to The Legal Project! As many of you know firsthand, September 14th was a soggy, wet, nasty day but the Golf Outing was a tremendous success, nonetheless! It was my fledgling attempt at golfing, and I was such a disaster on the golf course that my patient foursome won an award for “highest score”, apparently not much of a distinction in golf! (What do I know, I’m a baseball fan…) But it was a lot of fun anyway, and wonderful to see such great support for The Legal Project! Thanks to all of you who helped organize the event, played in the rain, were sponsors or donated prizes and goodie bag items!!

Thanks for taking cases in September!
