The Legal Project
Announces $50,000 Challenge Grant!
We are thrilled
to report that we have received a $50,000 Challenge Grant to match our
special Domestic Violence Appeal for 2006-2007! The match was received
by the Sidney & Beatrice Albert Foundation who
will be awarding The Legal Project with $15,000; Liza’s
Legacy Foundation who will contribute $20,000; The
Sherry and Barry Gold Donor Advised Fund of The Capital Region Community
Foundation will donate $10,000; and, the Law Firm of Martin,
Harding & Mazzotti will contribute $5,000 for a total of
$50,000 to match all contributions received for the remainder of 2006
and in 2007 which will support our Domestic Violence Legal Connection
Program—making your charitable dollars go twice as far. These
funds, matched with your donations, will assist us in services to pro
bono clients who are victims of domestic violence, helping us keep this
program going strong even after the loss of federal grant support in
2005-2006.
Thank You to Stuyvesant Plaza & The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce!
Hogtoberfest was a smashing success, with 22 charities benefiting from
the auctioned of pigs, painted by local artists and “adopted”
by numerous businesses in the Guilderland area. The auction took place
on October 12th at the Albany Country Club and The Legal Project was
thrilled when our pig, Pigger Stuyvesant, was auctioned to Ellen Browne
and Kerry Flynn (Pigger is pictured here at his new home). Thanks to
Ellen and Kerry for their generousity, and to our friends at Stuyvesant
Plaza for choosing us as their charity and to the Guilderland Chamber
for the wonderful idea of a creative way to partner non-profits and
the business community.

Stalking
as a Major Social & Criminal Justice Problem
As reported in the Family Violence Prevention Fund’s Newsflash,
more than seven million women and two million men in this country have
been stalked, finds a study from the National Center for Injury Prevention
and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Stalking affects
seven percent of women (one in 14 women) and two percent of men (one
in 50 men) in the U.S. at some time in their lives. The study was published
in the August 2006 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
“Stalking in the United States, Recent National Prevalence Estimates”
defines stalking as “being followed, spied on, or communicated
with, without consent at a level perceived to be somewhat dangerous
or life threatening.” It finds that individuals who are never
married, separated, widowed or divorced report significantly higher
rates of stalking than those who are married or living with a partner.
Those 55 or older, or retired, are least likely to have been stalked.
Results are based on findings from the Injury Control and Risk telephone
survey conducted from 2001 to 2003. Nearly 10,000 women and men aged
18 and older participated.
We are fortunate in this region to have the New York Anti-Stalking Task
Force, of which The Legal Project is a member, as a resource. The Task
Force is holding an important conference, Stalking and Schools:
Learning to Identify & Respond, on January 17 & 18,
2007 at the Heffner Alumni House at RPI, 110 Eighth Street, Troy. For
more information, contact Rachel Seeber at 518-431-0247 or at Rachel.E.Seeber@usdoj,gov.

was awarded to The Legal Project to support the Affordable Housing Attorney
Assistance Project in the Capital District. Many thanks to their longstanding

the important work of helping low income homebuyers with the legal aspects
of their home closing.
