Our commitment and goal

The Legal Project is committed to ensuring that victims of domestic violence can exercise their legal rights as effectively as others in our society. In 1998, The Legal Project initiated a program to extend the scope of attorney training and to increase services to victims of domestic violence whose incomes often prevent them from retaining private attorneys or using other legal services programs.

The goal of the program is to help victims of domestic violence achieve safety by obtaining Orders of Protection and, at the same time, resolving custody and visitation issues in a way that furthers the safety and independence of the survivor of domestic violence.

Services

  • Legal advice and representation is provided to victims of domestic violence seeking safety and independence from their abusers.
  • Free and reduced rate legal representation is offered in Family Court.
  • Legal representation is offered on other civil legal issues to victims of domestic violence who are seeking safety and help in staying independent from their abusers.
  • Free consultations on a wide range of non-criminal legal issues resulting from domestic violence. Legal consultations are provided at participating local domestic violence programs.
